Swedish delegation and Crown Princess Couple explores AI collaboration in Silicon Valley

Karl Henrik Johansson, Director of Digital Futures, was part of a delegation from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) that visited Silicon Valley from February 19 to 22. The delegation included DD.KK.HH., the Crown Princess, and Prince Daniel, aimed to strengthen cooperation opportunities between Silicon Valley and Sweden, focusing on strengthening Sweden’s standing in digitization and artificial intelligence (AI).

The motivation for the visit stems from the rapid advancements in AI and digital technologies observed in Silicon Valley. Marcus Wallenberg, Chair of IVA, emphasized the crucial need for Swedish entities to comprehend these developments, build relationships, and identify tangible business opportunities. The delegation, comprising 36 representatives from various sectors, including industry, startups, investors, academia, and the public sector, undertook a comprehensive program featuring visits to leading tech companies like OpenAI, NVIDIA, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Seminars on AI were also held at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI).

The visit to Silicon Valley carried out in collaboration with Business Sweden, was initiated at the request of the Swedish Government to expand and enhance relations with California, specifically in the realms of innovation, green transition, and emerging technologies, with a focus on AI. The trip also marked the opening of Sweden’s new Consulate General in San Francisco by the Crown Princess.

On 21 February, the Crown Princess Couple and the Minister visited prominent companies such as Nvidia, Intel, and Google in Palo Alto. Presentations on AI and discussions about its development were conducted, with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger providing insights into the company’s role in the AI landscape. The delegation also witnessed a demonstration showcasing how computers can learn to recognize shapes.

In the afternoon, the delegation shifted gears to Stanford University, where they delved into the ethical aspects of AI. The Crown Princess extended greetings to Swedish students during the visit. The collective experience emphasized Sweden’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation by fostering collaborations with Silicon Valley.

The exchange of knowledge and experiences is expected to pave the way for future collaborations, enhancing Sweden’s capabilities in artificial intelligence.
