Summer Research Internship Programme
The Digital Futures Summer Research Internship Programme offers bachelor’s and master’s students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in academic research during the summer. Interns work on a defined research project under the supervision of a Digital Futures–affiliated faculty member and take part in an active, interdisciplinary research environment at KTH and partner institutions.
Internships typically run for eight weeks during the summer, and interns contribute directly to ongoing research projects. The programme also includes joint activities such as a kick-off, seminars, industry visits, and final presentations, providing insight into research careers and collaboration across disciplines.
Who can participate?
- Bachelor’s and master’s students at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University
- Students from all disciplines, provided there is a suitable research project connected to digitalisation
Who can supervise?
Supervisors may come from KTH, Stockholm University, and RISE depending on the conditions defined in each annual call. Specific eligibility and funding conditions may vary from year to year and are detailed in the annual call.
How to apply as a student
Students do not apply directly to the programme. Instead, you are expected to:
- Identify a potential supervisor whose research matches your interests. You can find the list of faculty members here https://www.digitalfutures.kth.se/about/people/?_sft_people-type=digital-futures-faculty
- Contact the supervisor directly to discuss possible summer research projects and ask questions
- Agree on the project scope and expectations with the supervisor
The official call is shared with faculty members only, and all applications are submitted by the supervisor. Early contact with a potential supervisor is therefore essential.
International research environment
The Digital Futures Summer Research Internship Programme is embedded in an international research setting. In previous programme editions, the internship environment has included visiting students from leading international universities, such as:
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- Purdue University
- University of California, Berkeley
- Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
This international presence contributes to a diverse and stimulating research environment, promoting cross-cultural exchange and global perspectives on digital technologies and societal challenges.
Participation of international students may vary from year to year and depends on the specific conditions and partnerships defined.
