Dr. Xiaofei Yang is an Associate Professor at Guangzhou University, China. His research interests include artificial intelligence for Earth observation, remote sensing, deep learning, geospatial foundation models, and intelligent environmental monitoring. His work focuses on developing data-driven methods for extracting reliable geospatial information from large-scale Earth observation data, with particular attention to environmental applications.
During his stay as a Summer Early Career (SEC) grantee at the Division of Geoinformatics, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Xiaofei Yang has been working on the evaluation of Geospatial Foundation Model embeddings for wildfire burned-area mapping.
His research examines how pretrained geospatial representations encode spatial, spectral, and environmental information related to wildfire disturbances, and investigates their transferability across Earth observation settings. The project also explores effective ways of using and integrating these embeddings for burned-area mapping, with the broader goal of assessing the capabilities and current limitations of geospatial foundation models for scalable wildfire monitoring.
