Luis Gustavo Nonato

Scholar in residence 4 May – 24 July 2026

Luis Gustavo Nonato is a Full Professor at the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICMC–USP), São Carlos, Brazil. Prof. Nonato has held international visiting positions at leading research centers, including the Center for Data Science at New York University and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the University of Utah. He has played an active leadership role in the visualization and data science communities.

His research interests encompass data visualization, machine learning, and data science, with a particular emphasis on analytical methods for addressing complex real-world challenges, especially those related to crime and urban dynamics. Prof. Nonato is also strongly committed to fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government, leading joint initiatives with private companies and establishing partnerships with public agencies.

At Digital Futures, Nonato’s research focuses on understanding how the built environment shapes crime patterns and influences people’s perception of safety. In particular, he collaborates on projects investigating how urban infrastructure and spatial organization, including street network structure, land use, distribution of public facilities and services, and mobility flows affect crime dynamics and the spatiotemporal distribution of criminal activity. His work also examines how changes in urban environments are perceived by residents and how such transformations impact feelings of safety and insecurity.
