SEC scholar 1 August – 31 October 2026
Dr. Xueying Liu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). As an atmospheric chemistry modeling scientist, she applies chemical transport and Earth system models to investigate key air pollutants (e.g., PM2.5 and ozone) and their interactions with the environment, climate, and ecosystems. Her work has led to high-impact publications in broad Earth and environmental science journals such as Nature Food and Communications Earth & Environment, as well as in the leading atmospheric science journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.
During her stay as a Summer Early Career grantee, Xueying collaborated with Professor Yifang Ban at Division of Geoinformatics at KTH on estimating wildfire-induced emissions and air pollution. By combining Professor Ban’s expertise in AI for wildfire detection with Xueying’s strength in modeling the atmospheric chemistry impacts of wildfires, this project developed a novel framework that integrates satellite-based fire detection with atmospheric modeling to quantify the air quality impacts of wildfires in Canada.
