Guilherme Nunes de Vasconcelos

SEC scholar 1 March – 30 September 2026

Guilherme Nunes de Vasconcelos is a tenured assistant professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. He earned his Ph.D. in 2021 from the Graduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism (NPGAU/UFMG). His expertise focuses on immersive technologies (VR/AR/MR), with significant experience developing applications for technical training and education, including large-scale projects for the energy sector. Currently, he is a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

He coordinates the research group “Digital Technologies in Architecture” and has led the Digital Technologies Experimentation Center (NEXT) at UFMG. He also contributes as a researcher to the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) for Responsible Neurotechnology, specifically within the Neuroscience and Architecture axis. His research interests articulate embodied cognition, phenomenology, Soma Design, and immersive technologies applied to architectural design and pedagogy.

The primary aim of this visit is to develop the Soma-in-the-Loop (So-Lo) framework to investigate atmospheric experiences in Virtual Reality. The goal of this research is to address the challenges of embodied interaction by developing a soma-based design methodology that incorporates real-time physiological data and somatic appreciation of space. Specifically, the project focuses on how body-sensory data can guide the procedural generation and adaptation of immersive architectural environments. These methods aim to integrate fundamental principles of Soma Design into immersive technologies, enhancing the sensitivity, robustness, and atmospheric quality of digital spaces.
