Season’s Greetings and Highlights of 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on an inspiring year at Digital Futures, marked by impactful projects, collaborations, and events that continue to shape the future of digital technology and innovation.

This year saw the launch of several key initiatives, including the Digital Futures Summer Research Internship Programme, which provided hands-on research opportunities to 50 talented students from KTH and partner universities UC Berkeley and Purdue University. Over the summer, participants engaged in transformative projects, tackling challenges in digital innovation while receiving guidance from esteemed faculty and industry mentors. The program concluded in August with final presentations, showcasing the creative solutions developed by the students.

The Societal Innovation Projects remained a cornerstone of our efforts to address pressing urban challenges. With a focus on sustainable transport, healthcare accessibility, and climate-positive urban expansion, these initiatives brought together academic, industrial, and public actors. The projects aim to deliver solutions that align with Agenda 2030 goals, fostering collaboration across sectors.

The year began with the inaugural Digital Futures Young Scientist Conference in February. Exclusively designed for PhD students and postdocs collaborating with Digital Futures-affiliated faculty, the event provided a unique platform to share cutting-edge research, innovative ideas, and groundbreaking solutions in the dynamic landscape of digital transformation.

The European Control Conference 2024 was a major highlight, bringing over 1,100 participants to Stockholm. Emphasizing global collaboration, the conference underscored the critical role of automation and control systems in the evolving digital landscape. The event featured a welcome speech by the Minister of Education and Research, alongside industry exhibitions and panels, creating invaluable networking opportunities.

In September, Digital Futures hosted a remarkable TEDxKTH event focusing on the theme Our Digital Futures. Exploring the next frontier of innovation, this engaging platform brought together thought leaders and innovators to share powerful ideas and cutting-edge insights into the transformative potential of digital technologies, inspiring audiences to think boldly about the future.

Our annual Digitalize in Stockholm event in October focused on the theme Shaping the Future with Generative AI. The conference highlighted advancements in generative technologies, exploring their potential to revolutionize industries, enhance creativity, and address global challenges. With engaging discussions and demonstrations, participants delved into the transformative power of AI in shaping the digital future and enjoyed an exciting talk by Google DeepMind on AlphaFold.

Digital Futures also hosted the Scientific Advisory Board this year, bringing together leading international experts to evaluate our accomplishments and provide strategic guidance for future directions. The board’s insights are instrumental in ensuring that Digital Futures remains at the forefront of interdisciplinary research and innovation. These inputs played a key role during the Digital Futures Faculty Retreat, where planning for the next five years of the program was initiated. We look forward to contributing to the implementation of several proposals that the AI Commission submitted to the government in November.

As we look ahead to 2025, Digital Futures remains committed to its mission of fostering innovation through research and collaboration. With new calls for projects and upcoming events, the stage is set for another year of groundbreaking achievements. We are also getting new researchers involved in the Digital Futures management. Please join me in welcoming Pawel Herman and Martina Scolamiero to the Digital Futures Executive Committee. Starting January 1, Pawel will assume the role of Associate Director for Strategic Research, following the excellent work done by Viktoria Fodor. Martina will take on the position of Associate Director for Seminars & Workshops as Mario Romero transitions to new opportunities.

Thank you to our community of researchers, industrial and societal partners, and participants for making 2024 a memorable year. Together, we are building a future powered by digital excellence. A special thanks to Digital Futures Operations team – Claudia Enciso, Johanna Gavefalk, Vendela Hasselberg, Anna Kiefer and Ulrika Larsson.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally wish everyone a joyful holiday season and a prosperous new year. May the holidays bring warmth and inspiration as we prepare for the exciting year ahead.

Karl H. Johansson, Director Digital Futures
