Picture of Özlem Tuğfe DemirAbstract: In a cellular system with multiple wireless access points and mobile devices, multi-user interference and significant data rate variations inevitably appear across the coverage area. Recently, cell-free massive MIMO has evolved as a post-cellular network architecture to address the issues related to conventional cellular systems.

In user-centric cell-free massive MIMO, each mobile device is jointly served by a preferred set of cooperating access points, thus effectively removing the cell boundaries from each mobile device’s perspective. In this seminar, first, the physical-layer foundations of user-centric cell-free massive MIMO will be explained. In particular, the uplink and downlink data communications for centralized and distributed implementation will be overviewed with a particular emphasis on network scalability.

In the second part of the seminar, how a cell-free massive MIMO system can be built on top of a cloud radio access network that enables virtualized computational resource sharing by considering practical fronthaul transport and cloud-related constraints.

Bio:  Özlem Tuğfe Demir received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 2012, 2014, and 2018, respectively. She was a postdoctoral researcher with Linköping University, Sweden, in 2019 and 2020. She has been a postdoc with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, since 2021.

Özlem Tuğfe Demir will join the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at TOBB Economics and Technology University, Turkey as an assistant professor in September 2022. Her research interests focus on signal processing and optimization in wireless communications, massive MIMO, cell-free massive MIMO, beyond 5G multiple-antenna technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, machine learning for communications, and green mobile networks.
