AI in schools is a mess … is this a problem? By Neil Selwyn, professor in the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia.

Despite all the hype, the actual take-up and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Swedish school remains patchy. This is causing growing frustration amongst teachers, school leaders and others across the education sector who have spent the past couple of years pushing for the take-up of AI across the school system.

In this session, Neil Selwyn, considers the current state of AI in schools and anticipates where things might be headed next. Does Sweden need a coordinated national plan around AI and education? What might the long-term impact be of AI remaining something that is developed in schools in such an inconsistent manner? What sorts of ‘AI competence’ should teachers be encouraged to develop? What wider issues are so far missing from the national conversation around AI and education?

These questions will be discussed by Annika Angélii Genlott, project manager for the collaboration between SKR  (Sweden’s municipalities and regions), the Swedish National Agency for Education and the Government Offices in the development of a national action plan for school digitalization.

Moderators: Olga Viberg, Associate Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Teresa Cerratto Pargman, Professor of human-computer interaction at Stockholm University.
