Picture of Zhu RuiAbstract: Solar farming has been experiencing explosive development in recent years. Compared with the utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants located at remote and bare lands with stable meteorological conditions, effectively harvesting solar energy in urban areas is challenging because: (i) solar distribution is significantly affected by a complex 3D built environment, (ii) proper PV installed capacity is uncertain with the solar distribution that is quantitatively large (for generating a large amount of electricity) and spatially concentrated (for easy installation and maintenance), and (iii) the uncertainty of the economic performance of the PV system when comparing the income and expenditure during the whole life cycle. In this talk, I will introduce a 3D solar irradiation model to estimate solar distribution over 3D urban envelopes, present spatio-temporal analytic methods for planning PV modules in urban areas to meet real electricity demand, and design a solar charging solution for shared electric scooters to significantly reduce the operational cost made by the conventional charging method that requires frequent repositioning of the scooters.

Bio: Dr. Zhu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his BSc from Nanjing Normal University (China), MSc from KTH – Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and Ph.D. from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong SAR) with an exchange study at Université Laval (Canada). After that, Dr. Zhu has worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT Senseable City Laboratory, SMART (Singapore). Dr. Zhu has served as PI/Co-I for many academic projects, funded by the University Grants Committee, Hong Kong. Dr. Zhu’s study in solar cities and smart mobility has been reported by Singapore TV Channel 8, MIT News, Lianhe Zaobao, Topos Magazine, and Portfolio Magazine, etc. Dr. Zhu has also been engaging with several academic journals as guest editors and reviewers and international organizations.
