Stockholm inaugurated a new AI sandbox for the sustainable cities of the future – Stockholm Digital Sandbox

On May 29, Stockholm Digital Sandbox and Stockholm Urban Innovation Lab were inaugurated at Kristinehovs Malmgård in Stockholm. These new initiatives aim to strengthen collaboration between research, the public sector, and industry in order to develop smarter, safer, and more sustainable cities using AI and digital technology.

The initiatives are led by Digital Futures, KTH, and the City of Stockholm together with a broad network of partner organizations from academia, industry, and the public sector. Stockholm Digital Sandbox will serve as a testing and innovation environment where digital solutions can be developed and tested in real urban settings with a focus on tangible societal benefits.

“Stockholm Digital Sandbox demonstrates the strength of collaboration between academia, the public sector, and industry. By combining research with real urban environments, we create better conditions for innovation that contributes to a more sustainable society,” says Anders Söderholm, President of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).

During the inauguration, several ongoing testbeds and innovation projects in urban development, mobility, and digital infrastructure were presented. Visitors and media representatives had the opportunity to meet researchers, decision-makers, and industry representatives, as well as take part in demonstrations of sensors and AI-based solutions in urban environments.

“Stockholm has strong potential to become an international role model for responsible and socially driven AI development. Through Stockholm Digital Sandbox, we connect world-leading research with concrete needs in the urban environment and lay the foundation for new innovations,” says Urban Forssell, Head of AI Strategy & Innovation at Digital Futures/KTH.

In connection with the event, Stockholm Urban Innovation Lab was also launched — a new initiative between KTH and the City of Stockholm designed to strengthen the link between research, innovation, and practical urban development.

“AI and digitalization are playing an increasingly important role in the development of the cities of the future. Through Stockholm Digital Sandbox, we are creating opportunities to turn research and innovation into practical solutions that can improve people’s everyday lives and contribute to a more sustainable society,” says Karin Wanngård, Finance Commissioner of the City of Stockholm.

Opening speeches were given by Anders Söderholm, President of KTH, and Karin Wanngård, Finance Commissioner of the City of Stockholm. Several industry representatives also participated in the program: Magnus Frodigh, Senior Advisor (formerly VP and Head of Research) at Ericsson, Niklas Klingenberg, Head of R&D at TRATON, and Henrik Johansson, Director of Business Development at Skanska. All emphasized the importance of collaboration between industry, research, and the public sector in developing the sustainable cities of the future.
