Open call: Scholar-in-Residence programme

The Digital Futures ‘Scholar-in-Residence’ programme aims to provide established research leading scholars at non-Swedish universities with financial support to enable short and longer-term visits to the Digital Futures environment (minimum 1 month, maximum 12 months) over 12 months. This funding programme aims to support academics who wish to benefit from a sabbatical within Digital Futures. How this time away from a home institution is used is flexible and for the scholar-in-residence to decide.

Our hope for this programme of funding is to broaden the diversity of those taking part in Digital Futures, to enable new global perspectives on digitalisation research to influence our progress.  In all cases, we intend that the scholar-in-residence programme should enrich the activities of Digital Futures through participation in, for example, research, teaching, events, and mentorship of early career researchers.

Applications to this funding programme are made on behalf of a proposed scholar-in-residence by a Digital Futures faculty member. As a potential scholar-in-residence, you should first make contact with a Digital Futures faculty member with whom you would like to cooperate during your time in the Digital Futures environment (see the full list here: https://www.digitalfutures.kth.se/about/governance/digital-futures-faculty/faculty-members/).

If successfully funded, this Digital Futures faculty member will be your host during the period of their sabbatical, offering practical support as necessary to help ensure the success of the residency. Only KTH Digital Futures faculty members can be hosts of a scholar in residence. Stockholm University or RISE Digital Futures faculty members can be co-hosts.

Please note that scholars who have already benefitted from a scholar-in-residence visit at Digital Futures can re-apply. However, at least 2 years must pass between the last day of their previous scholar-in-residence visit and the first day of their new scholar-in-residence visit.

We would like to encourage applications from women, and minority candidates as these groups are currently underrepresented within this funding mechanism.

What the call offers

  • Funding (up to 30,000 SEK / month) to cover housing, travel and other costs associated with the residency. The funding does not include salary costs.
  • An international workplace and environment.
  • Access to Digital Futures’ resources, its network of academic and industrial partners, infrastructure and testbeds, events and happenings.

Eligibility

  • The scholar-in-residence must be permanently employed at a non-Swedish university.
  • The scholar-in-residence should not have spent more than 12 months in Sweden during the 3 years before the date of application.
  • The scholar-in-residence should not already have an affiliate position at Stockholm University, KTH or RISE.
  • The scholar-in-residence should be a senior academic employed as either associate or full professor (grade or equivalent).
  • Before applying, the PI must have ensured that his/her department is prepared to receive a Scholar-in-Residence and that appropriate administrative procedure is followed.

Important dates

  • This is a reoccurring call with applications possible every three months. Upcoming deadlines are as follows:
    • 9 September 2024
    • 18 November 2024
    • 10 March 2025

Application process

  • Applications should be made by a Digital Futures faculty member who acts as a sponsor for the proposed scholar-in-residence.
  • The application should consist of the following:
    • 2-page C.V. alongside a full publication list of the proposed scholar-in-residence
    • 1-page description of the proposed scholar-in-residence competencies related to Digital Futures, planned activities, including how the scholar will engage with Digital Futures, and planned start date which must fall within 12 months of the Scholar-in-Residence application date
    • Budget specifying anticipated costs for the residency
    • A letter of support from sponsoring Digital Futures faculty member

  • Applications will be assessed by Digital Futures Executive Committee. Decisions will be typically made within one month of submission.
