Since the launch of the GTP 3.5 in November 2022, discussions about AI literacy in the education sector have become more central and are today characterized by a new sense of urgency. In particular, interest in understanding the meaning of being AI literate got prominence, especially for teacher education, which aims to provide teacher students with adequate professional competence for a school that uses AI technology to mediate learning and teaching. At the same time, a growing number of educational researchers have highlighted the complexity of introducing AI in education with its known ethical implications related to discrimination, fairness, and accountability.
This prompts several questions; what do educators need to know to discern the pedagogical value of AI in the classroom? What is critical for educators and learners to understand so they can establish and maintain a relationship with AI that promotes their development? What is the minimal knowledge educators and learners need about AI to benefit from it and avoid risks? Such questions will be discussed with experts from academia, the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket), the AI Commission, and the Swedish EdTech Industry.
The aim is to discuss what we talk about when we talk about AI Literacy and identify assumptions about AI as a game changer in the education sector while engaging with issues related to the national edtech industry.

- Anna Åkerfeldt, Stockholm University
