Digital Futures researcher and faculty member Anna Furberg was recently interviewed by Svenska Dagbladet, one of Sweden’s leading daily newspapers, for an article exploring the growing debate around the environmental impact of AI and the increasing public resistance to new AI data centres in the United States.
In the interview, Anna Furberg discusses how concerns about the rapid development of AI—particularly among younger generations—are linked to worries about the resource demands of data centres and their broader societal impact. She also highlights the importance of considering both the local and global environmental effects of expanding digital infrastructure.
The article further points to Sweden’s advantages as a location for more sustainable data centres, including its cooler climate, opportunities to reuse excess heat, and a stable electricity grid. According to Furberg, the overall environmental impact of AI ultimately depends on how the technology is used—it can both accelerate the green transition and contribute to increased environmental pressures.
